ASO tools for indie iOS developers in 2026: an honest comparison
You don't need a $75,000 market intelligence contract to rank a small iPhone app. You need the right tool for the question you are asking. Here is what each one is good at, what it costs, and where we think Fledly fits.

Disclosure: we make Fledly. We've tried to describe every tool, including ours, by what it is good at and what it costs. Prices are as publicly listed in October 2026 and change often, so check the vendor's page before buying.
What an indie developer actually needs
A solo iOS developer usually has three questions, and they need different tools:
- Which searches can my app rank for, and how am I doing? Keyword research, daily rank tracking, Apple Ads popularity, competitor keywords.
- How is my app doing commercially? Downloads, revenue, conversion, reviews. Mostly App Store Connect, and tools that read it for you.
- What should I build next, or which market should I enter? Who earns, how much, how recently they launched, and how crowded the market is.
Most ASO tools are built around question 1. The expensive ones answer question 3 with panel data. Few are built for a developer who wants to answer question 3 on a budget.

The tools one by one
Astro
A native Mac app focused on keywords. You connect your own Apple Ads account, so popularity numbers come straight from Apple. It is cheap, fast and simple, and it suits a developer with one or two apps who wants rank history without a web dashboard. It doesn't try to cover Google Play or market-wide revenue.
Sonar
A web tool with an indie-friendly price, iOS and Google Play coverage, and an API with daily request limits. It is a good choice if you want to script your ASO or feed it to other tools. Like most keyword tools, it is about the searches you already know to track.
Appfigures
The broadest tool at indie prices. Its core is your own data: it connects to App Store Connect and Google Play to show downloads, revenue and reviews next to rankings. The Monitor and Optimize plans add keyword tracking with more volume. If you want one dashboard for your existing apps, start here.
AppTweak
A mature platform with years of ranking history, keyword suggestions, competitor tracking, Apple Ads features and market intelligence add-ons. It is priced for teams and agencies; for a single indie app it is more tool than most people use.
Mobile Action
Strong on Apple Ads (Apple Search Ads) management, with ASO features alongside. Worth a look if paid search is a big part of your growth.
Sensor Tower
The market intelligence standard: download and revenue estimates across the whole store, ad intelligence and years of history. Pricing is by quote and aimed at companies. For an indie developer the data is excellent and the price is usually out of reach.
WowKeywords
A one-time-purchase desktop app that keeps your data on your machine, includes an AI agent for keyword work and can talk to AI assistants through MCP. A good fit if you dislike subscriptions and want a local tool.
Fledly
Fledly starts from a different question: what is already working for newcomers? Every day it collects the US Top Grossing charts (overall and every category), keeps the apps that launched in the last 24 months and aren't from big publishers, groups them into app concepts, and scores each concept on proven revenue, how many different developers made it work, real user pull (new ratings per month) and how recently the newest one launched. The score is shown part by part, with the competitors' prices and their users' most common complaints.
It also tracks your own apps: daily search ranks, Apple Ads search popularity, keyword suggestions, competitor gaps and cross-localization keyword fields.
Where Fledly is weaker today: it is iOS only, it is new, so its own rank history starts in 2026, and its revenue numbers are estimates from chart rank, not panel data. If you need years of history or Google Play, pair it with one of the tools above or choose one of them instead.
We explain the scoring method in detail in How to validate an iOS app idea with App Store data.
How to choose
- "I have one app and want to rank it better." Astro or Sonar. Add Appfigures' free tier if you want your sales in the same place.
- "I have a few apps and care about revenue." Appfigures.
- "I run ASO for clients." AppTweak or Mobile Action.
- "I need market-wide download and revenue estimates for investors or a company." Sensor Tower.
- "I want to know which app to build next, and see the evidence." Fledly. It also covers rank tracking for the app you then ship.
Whatever you pick, the method matters more than the tool: track your ranks daily, change one thing at a time, and write down what you changed. Our keyword field guide covers the basics that every tool assumes you know.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best ASO tool for indie iOS developers?
It depends on the question. For cheap keyword tracking, Astro or Sonar. For your own sales and ranks together, Appfigures. For deciding which app to build next based on young apps that already earn, Fledly. Most solo developers need one keyword tool and one source of market evidence.
Is there a free ASO tool for the App Store?
Yes. Appfigures has a free tier, Astro's free version tracks 10 keywords, and Fledly has a free plan with one app and 15 tracked keywords. Apple Ads also shows search popularity for free to anyone with an Apple Ads account.
What is the cheapest alternative to Sensor Tower?
For download and revenue estimates, there is no cheap equivalent with the same coverage. For indie needs, Appfigures, Sonar and Fledly cover parts of it: Appfigures for your own data, Sonar for keywords, and Fledly for revenue estimates from Top Grossing ranks and young-app evidence.
Do I need an ASO tool at all?
Not to start. You can do keyword research with App Store autocomplete and Apple Ads popularity, and check ranks by hand. A tool becomes worth it when you track more than a handful of searches or want daily history to measure your changes.
